History of Hosparus

On this page:

  • Hospice of Louisville history.
  • Hospice of Central Kentucky history.
  • Hospice of Southern Indiana history.

Hosparus is the new name, adopted in 2008, for a hospice and care organization that has been a fixture of Louisville and the surrounding region for decades.

Formerly the Alliance of Community Hospices and Palliative Care Services (ACH), Hosparus is now a single organization to help you handle end-of-life care.

Hosparus includes all former components of the ACH:

  • Hospice of Louisville.
  • Hospice of Central Kentucky.
  • Hospice of Southern Indiana.

Hosparus also includes the Hosparus Grief Counseling Center and the Hosparus Education and Volunteer Center.

Hospice of Louisville

Hospice of Louisville accepted its first patient in June of 1978. It was the first hospice formed in Kentucky.

Some 28 years and 40,000 patients later, Hospice of Louisville still serves the community with 360 staff members and more than 400 volunteers. We provide medical services and compassionate support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses.

To help families cope with the loss of their loved ones, Hospice of Louisville in 1981 began a bereavement counseling program that came to be known as the Hosparus Grief Counseling Center. Today, several locations provide counseling for people coping with grief and loss.

In 1980, we started the region's first pediatric hospice program, Kourageous Kids.

Hospice of Central Kentucky

In April of 1980, the Elizabethtown Area Hospice cared for its first patient. The agency was staffed entirely by volunteers who provided care for patients and families living in and around Elizabethtown. Eventually, the organization came to be known as Hospice of Central Kentucky.

After a successful capital campaign in 1993, Hospice of Central Kentucky moved into its current location, an office building on Diecks Drive in Elizabethtown. Hospice of Central Kentucky also operates a satellite office in Campbellsville.

With more than 60 employees and more than 100 volunteers, Hospice of Central Kentucky annually provides quality end-of-life care that includes pain and symptom control and emotional and spiritual support to more than 800 patients and their families in Adair, Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Taylor and Washington counties.

Dedicated to helping families cope with the loss of their loved ones, Hospice of Central Kentucky's Bereavement Program offers individual and family counseling and related groups.

Hospice of Southern Indiana

In June of 1978, Hospice of Southern Indiana admitted its first patient.

Today, more than 30 years and 15,000 patients later, Hospice of Southern Indiana serves the community with more than 75 staff members and more than 100 volunteers. We provide medical care, comfort and counseling to individuals and families who are facing life-limiting illnesses.
