The role of the patient's attending physician

The patient's attending physician is a member of the interdisciplinary team and is a full participant in the provision of hospice care. Each patient admitted to the hospice program has a designated attending licensed physician. The attending physician may be the hospice medical director. Medical care provided will be in accordance with accepted hospice standards of practice.

Defining palliative medicine

Palliative medicine relieves suffering when a cure for an illness is not expected. It focuses on pain and symptom management, but also addresses emotional and spiritual support. It is patient-centered but extends care to the family and community as well.
